Confession: the urge to create new and different images hits me hard and at unexpected times, and I can’t ignore it. Usually, the warm season brings lots of time for me to play and try new things with friends – friends who trust me to not make them look stupid even when I’m asking them to throw themselves around limply in open fields or run up a small slope of hill 1,000 times until I’m satisfied. This summer has been full of weddings and seniors, which I am SO thankful for! But, somehow, I haven’t found as much time as usual to experiment with my work.

Graduating from college has meant a lot of things for me, but one thing that I didn’t factor in was that my willing, trusting models who had worked with me for four years would all suddenly not be a 3 minutes or a text away. Desperate to photograph, I posted on Facebook a few days ago asking if anyone would be willing to travel to me to shoot. I’m so glad I did! Turns out, one of my trusted Morris models and friends Alissa lives 15 minutes away from my new home and was willing to spend part of her Friday evening with me!

One of my goals this year in photography has been to step back and just LOOK at the scene before shooting. A lot of times I have a clear image in mind, so I manipulate the scene and the light to make it happen. There is nothing wrong with that, and in fact it is part of what makes me a professional – being able to get the results I want no matter the circumstances. However, I suspect that sometimes I miss the beauty in the natural scene – what’s there before I manipulate. I told Alissa before the shoot that I might be doing a lot of blank staring at and around her, just LOOKING! Not the most comfortable situation for a paying client, but for a friend? A-okay.

To be honest, I’m in love with what we created together. This whole set was shot around my apartment building with completely natural light. All the blurs and imperfections in the images that you see were created by me with various objects while shooting, not in post processing.
